C²DecodedTHE ART OF UNDERSTANDING

LEARNING THEME · 03

Make room for a clearer answer.

You do not need a perfect line. Start with a question that the other person can answer in their own words.

Ask without supplying the verdict

“What matters most to you here?” leaves more room than “You only care about the deadline, don’t you?” Try to name the topic without deciding the person’s motive for them.

Check the summary

Use “Have I understood correctly?” after a short restatement of the point. A useful summary is one the other person can correct. It need not include your argument or your next request.

State a boundary plainly

“I can discuss this for ten minutes, then I need to leave.” A boundary communicates what you will do. It is clearer when it does not depend on diagnosing or blaming someone else.

Know the scope

These are reflective practices for everyday conversation. They are not a substitute for professional support or a strategy for handling danger, abuse or a mental-health crisis.
