LEARNING THEME · 01
Understand the request behind the words.
Persuasion begins with a proposition. Bring that proposition into view before deciding how to respond.
What am I being asked to do?
A request may sit inside a story, an explanation or an urgent invitation. Try restating it in one plain sentence: “You are asking me to agree to this today.” Let the other person correct that summary.
What is information, and what is pressure?
List the facts you can check, the assumptions you would need to accept and any deadline being presented. A deadline may be real; ask what creates it rather than assuming it is either legitimate or manipulative.
What would make the choice fair?
You may need time, an alternative, written terms or a clearer explanation. Saying what you need can make a conversation more specific. It does not guarantee agreement.
Respect the answer
Ethical persuasion leaves another person free to decline. This theme is not a promise of techniques that make anyone comply.
